The governments of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Honduras have signed a memorandum of understanding to implement tilapia farming project in floating cages installed on the Gulf of Fonseca.
The signing of the memorandum was attended by the ambassador of Taiwan in Honduras, Joseph Kuo; Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock, Jacobo Paz, and the head of the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DIGEPESCA), José Roberto Hernandez.
The project will last a year and a half (until December 2017) and will cost a total of HNL 15 million, of which Taiwan will provide HNL 13 million (USD 580,000), and the government of Honduras the remaining HNL 2 million (USD 92,000).
As part of this initiative, four floating cages will be installed in brackish waters of the Gulf of Fonseca and provide technology training to more than a hundred people. In addition, two groups of fishermen will be organized in the area to improve their management capacity.
